The Nati had their best finish in 1950 in Brazil, placing sixth in the Group Stage.

In the only time it hosted the World Cup in 1954, Switzerland placed eighth after reaching the quarterfinals.

Nati made sure Kosovo can’t win by huge margin despite playing in Pristina

Switzerland’s players are aware of what’s at stake and never lose sight of the goal.

The Nati knew Kosovo needed to win by a bigger margin to supplant them for first place in Group B.

“We didn’t play badly, but we knew they (Kosovo) had to score six goals (to overtake) Switzerland’s goal difference),” Swiss defender Ricardo Rodriguez told SRF Sport.

“And it’s not easy to play against us,” he added.

Kosovo settles for spot in Interconfederation playoffs

All is not lost for Kosovo despite missing out on direct qualification to the World Cup.

The Dardanet placed second in Group B with 11 points on a 3-2-1 record.

That was enough to send the hosts to the Interconfederation playoffs set next year.

Kosovo will join Iraq (AFC), Bolivia (CONMEBOL), New Caledonia (Oceania), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (CAF) in the playoffs.

The final round of the CONCACAF qualifiers will determine the other two playoff spots.

Jamaica and Panama are the favorites to qualify for the mini-tournament.
